Chances - Five For Fighting (Vladimir John Ondrasik III)

[Verse 1]

Chances are when said and done
Who'll be the lucky ones
Who make it all the way?
Though you say I could be your answer
Nothing lasts forever
No matter how it feels today

[Chorus 1]

Chances are we'll find a new equation
Chances rolled away from me
Chances are all they hope to be

[Verse 2]

Don't get me wrong, I'd never say never
'Cause though love can't change the weather
No act of God can pull me away from you
I'm just a realistic man
A bottle filled with shells and sand
Afraid to love beyond what I can lose
When it comes to you
And though I see us through, yeah

[Chorus 2]

Chances are we'll find two destinations
Chances roll away from me
Still, chances are more than expectations
The possibilities—over me

[Bridge]

Eight-to-five or two-to-one
Lay your money on your son
Until you crash, what have you done?
Is there a better bet than love?
What you are is what you bring
You gotta cry before you sing
Chances, chances
Chances lost are hope's torn-out pages
Maybe this time

[Chorus 3]

Chances are we'll be the combination
Chances come and carry me
Chances are waiting to be taken
And I can see
Chances are—the fascinations
Chances won't escape from me
Chances are only what we make them
And all I need

I Can’t Hold On – Karla Bonoff

SOLO (TWICE)

Oh baby, this time it's a good-bye

And you can be sure that I won't cry

Our love is just a faded story

I'm walking down the road

And you've just got to let me go ‘cause

CHORUS

I can't hold on

I can't hold on

I can't hold on anymore

And what was, that sweet lullaby

And were all those promises just lies

But I was just a fool to love you

I knew it all along

I can't look down I know I'm falling ‘cause

CHORUS

BRIDGE

When you act the way you do

I want to scream and shout

You keep on playing games

I walk around the block and think maybe you'll change

But just when it seems we've got it all worked out

You start naming names

I don't believe that I was the one to blame

And maybe . . . next time you'll cry

When someone like me says good-bye

You'll wake up when she's gone and wonder

How you could let her go

But look at me, I'm going under ‘cause

CHORUS

No no

CHORUS

OUTRO SOLO

I’ll Be There For You - The Rembrandts

So no one told you life was gonna be this way

Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A.

It's like you're always stuck in second gear

When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, but

I'll be there for you

(When the rain starts to pour)

I'll be there for you

(Like I've been there before)

I'll be there for you

('Cause you're there for me too)

You're still in bed at ten and work began at eight

You've burned your breakfast, so far things are going great

Your mother warned you there'd be days like these

But what she didn't tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees that

I'll be there for you

(When the rain starts to pour)

I'll be there for you

(Like I've been there before)

I'll be there for you

('Cause you're there for me too)

No one could ever know me

No one could ever see me

Seems you're the only one who knows what it's like to be me

Someone to face the day with, make it through all the rest with

Someone I'll always laugh with

Even at my worst, I'm best with you, yeah!

[Lead Solo–verse]

It's like you're always stuck in second gear

When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year

I'll be there for you

(When the rain starts to pour)

I'll be there for you

(Like I've been there before)

I'll be there for you

('Cause you're there for me too)

I'll be there for you

I'll be there for you

I'll be there for you

('Cause you're there for me too)

Loneliness

Loneliness

Words and Music by Lars Eric Pointer © 1960
Performed by Sherman Keene

All the leaves are falling

The sky is turning grey

A winter time is coming

Shortening up my days

Green is turning brown

The wind is coming round

The whining of the sound

Of loneliness

The Sun sets on the rocks

And the rocks set on the field

I don’t recall it ever

Having seemed so real

My number’s coming up

The door is slamming shut

There are no ifs or buts

In loneliness

Piano solo

I feel the change a-walking

Unsteady to his mark

I feel the error standing

As grey slips into dark

Cracking of the whip

The wailing of the ship

The weary days of trip

In loneliness

The pine tree it stands tall

Long silhouetted limbs

A young girl walking past

Afraid to talk to him

Disappearing moon

Yellow in the gloom

The never-ending tune

Of loneliness

Ring Them Bells - Bob Dylan
Sung By Sarah Jarosz

Ring them bells, ye heathen

From the city that dreams,

Ring them bells from the sanctuaries

Cross the valleys and streams,

For they’re deep and they’re wide

And the world’s on its side

And time is running backwards

And so is the bride.

Ring them bells Saint Peter

Where the four winds blow,

Ring them bells with an iron hand

So the people will know.

So it's rush hour now

On the wheel and the plow

And the sun is going down

Upon the sacred cow.

Instrumental Verse

Ring them bells Sweet Martha,

For the poor man’s son,

Ring them bells so the world will know

That God is the one.

Oh the shepherd is asleep

Where the willows weep

And the mountains are filled

With his lost sheep.

Ring them bells for the blind and the deaf,

Ring them bells for all of us who are left,

Ring them bells for the chosen few

Who will judge the many when the game is through.

Ring them bells, for the time that flies,

For the child that cries

When innocence dies.

Ring them bells Saint Catherine

From the top of the room,

Ring them from the fortress

For the lilies that bloom.

Oh the lines are long

And the fighting is strong

And they’re breaking down the distance

Between right and wrong.

Warmer Friend

Warmer Friend

words and music © 1960 by Sherman Keene

Been hanging ‘round here much too long

I need out I need a windy song

Don’t try to find me ‘cause I’ll be gone

Don’t try to find me ‘cause I’ll be gone

Summer’s loved and gone again

I’ll go searching for a warmer friend

With her to warmer summers spend

With her to warmer summers spend

Change from minor to major finger picking solo

Change to minor

Things are moving much too fast

Got to slow down and make something last

So I can catch up with my past

So I can catch up with my past

Been hanging ‘round here much too long

I need out I need a windy song

Don’t try to find me ‘cause I’ll be gone

Don’t try to find me ‘cause I’ll be gone

Lyrics For 2026

If you recall, Captain Nemo had a pipe organ in his salon. Before mounting each attack on warships he would play loud, solemn music.

In this pipe organ version of the recording, I have attempted to make the sound of a loud pipe organ echoing through the reverberant insides of an all-metal submarine.

COMMENTS

“It is pretty spooky. You got very chromatic there. It sounds awesome. I love how you’re using reverb creatively.”
—Raul—

“Wow! That is a sonic Masterpiece! I love it! Keep going! Take us to new-depths!” —Gregg—

In the “old days,” as I recall, we performed all  the choruses in 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, 3/4. To honor my memory of this beautiful song, I performed the chorus of the second verse this way to preserve the original feeling of the song.

At song time 1:30

4/4 - My number’s coming up
3/4 - The door is slamming
4/4 - Shut
3/4 - There are no ifs or
4/4 - buts
3/4 - In loneliness
4/4 . . .
