My Multimedia Lab
This is where I produced
large publications, CDs, videos and web-based training and sales
systems that my employer uses to sell its product and train its
staff world-wide. This lab space was set aside for my needs as
a multimedia producer & director. Part of the time I worked
here unassisted. The remainder of the time I worked with subject
experts to create multimedia training and sales products.

My Larry King Jr.
set. By using a common computer projector, shown here projecting
the image of the Earth, the rolling of videos taken
from TV or computer monitors is eliminated.

My Avid video editor. With it,
I can produce a broadcast-ready production in a matter of a few
hours. I did this on a regular basis when I produced corporate
communication videos and when I produced hug videos
for our customers when they attend a month-long training seminar.

My Big Mac. With this
computer I produced large (2,500+ page) PageMaker documents that
depict my companys standard operating practices.

Video decks and my multimedia
PC. The video decks served as a source to the Avids digitizing
system and as a way of striking one-off copies for
clients and business locations.

Seiko Instruments, USA
Director of Documentation
And Training
Seiko is a Fortune 50 company where, working with my training and documentation staff, we implemented all training courses, created all internal and customer's documentation, and published all newsletters and data sheets. My responsibilities included hiring and training of personnel, design of all training courses and training materials, evaluating instructors and documenters and marketing our training courses world-wide.
This is the lab Seiko provided me in which
to work. Pictured from left to right on the main work surface:
Apple Laserwriter NTX, Kodak Slide projector, Sony U-Matic 3/4
inch video recorder, Pioneer Level III Videodisc player, Macintosh
fx twin-monitor computer with a VideoLogic Mediator supporting
the left-hand monitor, Syquest drive, HP scanner, rack of audio
equipment, photographic copier stand. On the conference table:
four laserdiscs I created through the Torrance Pioneer plant that
contained the video components for the multimedia products I produced
for Seiko. On the wall: some of the 18 x 24 inch process-color
packaging prints that I designed to package Seiko's multimedia
products.
Here's a low-light view of my workstation.
Mounted atop the right-hand monitor is a Canon Hi-8 A1 Mark II
video camera. This camera was used to capture all video content.
It was also mounted to the photographic copy stand (pointing downwards
at the light table) so that video stills of artwork could be photographed
and frame-grabbed. The circuit board artwork, used as a background
for the multimedia packaging (below) was captured this way.
Created the Training Department, hired, trained and managed all trainers, created all product and training documentation and audio/video training aids, initiated the use of MCI Mail for the Sales Force, training all sales people in the use of MCI Mail including automatic distribution of sales leads, training materials, electronic quotations, and automated distribution of product data to management, the sales force and customers.
Training customers included: Motorola,
Intel, General Motors, and Hewlett Packard.

Marketed Seiko's training products world-wide through the use of direct mail, MCI Mail, and MCI Fax Broadcast.

Created two encyclopedic-length multimedia training systems. The two graphics (above) are taken from the larger, 13 x 13 inch computer graphics that I created to package Seiko's multimedia training products. In this design, only the spine panels were different, reflecting the name of the training product, inside. Director-authored multimedia ran from Syquest disks with all video and still photographs presented on the computer screen from a 12 inch laserdisc controlled by RS232. Access time for any photograph (or video) on the laserdisc: 1/4 second. These systems contained our complete field service procedures for two of Seiko's most popular robot systems. Containing up to four hours of non-compressed, 60-field, full-screen, broadcast-quality video each, these interactive training systems are the next best thing to having a visit from a factory-trained service person at a fraction of the cost and access time. Performed all video and digital still photography and multimedia programming.
Additional services provided to other divisions of Seiko: email and mass marketing training, custom programming to create a database product that is sold world-wide, color product photography, multimedia trade-show kiosk presentations, corporate video presentations, scientific newsletters, desktop publishing training and custom (Clipper) database application programs.
